Supporting local hospice

HAVEN Funeral Services were thrilled to be able to donate valuable funds to Michael Sobell Hospice which provides care, comfort and support for local people facing life-limiting illnesses.

Turning empty sweet tubs into money for charity

Devon-wide recycling firm DCW Polymers is stepping up a post-Christmas campaign by collecting, regrinding, and then selling the granules from plastic confectionery tubs.

With the help of 78 businesses within Devon and Cornwall this year’s collection takes in an expanded range of tubs and will raise money for Dartmoor Zoo, Mind and Macmillan.

Collections will begin at the end of January, and local collection points are Torbay & District Funeral Service in Torquay; Herring Shoes in Kingsbridge; Michael Howard High Quality Family Butchers in Moretonhampstead; The Cridford Inn at Trusham; Chudfridge in Chudleigh; Co-op Food in Bovey Tracey; The Sugar Mill in Chudleigh and The Auto Centre in Teignmouth.

If you would like to donate to the appeal, we encourage you to do so as part of your daily exercise or essential shop. Lets all stay safe.

Christmas Window Display

Funeral Partners branches across the country brought local communities some festive cheer by transforming their funeral homes with decorations and memory trees and by showing support for charity collections over the Christmas period.

Torbay & District Funeral Service, Torquay, created a festive display in their front window which encouraged donations of food to Feed a Child Torbay, the charity fighting child hunger in the region, as well as collecting advent calendars for Sanctuary Safe Housing, which shelters children in danger.

Community rallies for local children at Christmas

This year, once again the team at Torbay & District Funeral Service went above and beyond to help kids in Torbay over the 2020 Christmas period.

Every year the team appeals to the community to donate advent calendars for children living in safe houses in Torbay as well as Feed A Child Torbay, a charity held very dear. There is an annual foodbank at the funeral home but at Christmas the appeal is expanded to include Christmas items for children living in poverty. Currently there are over 3200 Children registered in the Bay as living in poverty.

When the members of Paignton Lions Club heard that Torbay & District Funeral Services were collecting Advent Calendars, Toys and Gifts, toiletries etc. for Feed a Child Torbay and for those Children in Safe houses within the bay, they immediately answered the call by purchasing over 100 Advent Calendars along with a good number of Xmas selection boxes and various chocolate.

There are 14 safehouses in Torbay. The appeal provides calendars, sweets, toiletries for the mums and the older children as there are often children up to the age of 18.

Funeral Directors Sarah Lockton and Mark Carr want to thank everyone who donated to the appeal.

Sarah said: “So many people have come forward at this very difficult time to donate their kindness to our appeal

Without our wonderful public of Torbay, we would never of achieved this appeal. Hundreds of kids in Torbay will now receive an advent calendar or boxes of sweets and toys and gifts on Christmas Day who without the help of everyone who donated may not have been fortunate enough to have a small but very meaningful gift this Christmas.”

A Santa costume was borrowed, route map created and on Christmas Eve the two set off on their travels.

Adults and children stood at their gates and doorways ringing bells as Santa travelled round the streets of the Village. Great fun was had by all and people are already asking will this become an annual event.

Festive Tree Competition

Festive trees of many designs and sizes delighted visitors to St Peter’s Church in Old Woking on the weekend before Christmas.

The church ensured strict Covid-19 health and safety precautions were in place so they were able to stage this much-loved biennial community event.

There were 28 entries for the festival, mainly from church and community groups and also from families.

More than 70 family groups toured the trees over the weekend, as carols played in the background with a simultaneous collection for the Woking Hospice charity and the St Peter’s fabric fund.

Visitors voted for their favourite tree and Woking Funeral Service was second with its tribute to the NHS.
