Your questions answered

What is direct or unattended cremation?

An unattended (or direct) cremation is a simple cremation without a funeral. There are usually no mourners in attendance, and it is different to a traditional funeral as there is no funeral service or ceremony. However, if you’d like a memorial service for your loved one, you can do so at a later date.

With an unattended cremation the ashes can be collected from the crematorium or funeral home, giving you the chance to say goodbye in a way that’s personal to you. If you would like some inspiration for what to do with the ashes of a loved one, we have a some suggestions to inspire you.

Why choose a direct cremation?

There is a growing number of people who are interested in alternative funerals or are unable to spend lots of money on a cremation or burial. In these instances, direct cremations provide cremation with minimal additional costs. Other reasons that a person may choose a direct cremation include:

  • Those who want a fuss-free cremation
  • People wanting a celebration of life without a traditional funeral
  • Anyone wishing to reduce funeral costs by avoiding additional charges
  • People who want minimal funeral planning
  • Those wanting a memorial service/to scatter the ashes at a later date

What is involved in direct cremation?

First and foremost, you or a family member will need to contact your chosen funeral directors to discuss which cremation type you are interested in. We have a variety of funeral homes that offer a direct cremation service.

There are a number of necessary forms and paperwork that you will need to complete, in addition to registering the death of your friend, family member or partner. If you have any questions about how to register a death, we can help.

As there is nobody in attendance, the date, time and location of the cremation are organised by the funeral home. The ashes are then scattered in the garden of remembrance or, if you prefer, can be returned so you can scatter them as you wish.

How much does direct cremation cost?

If you are interested in a direct cremation for your loved one, prices range from £1,100 – £1,500.

This includes:

  • Bringing the deceased into our care (planned collection from a hospital within 25 miles)
  • Care and preparation of your loved one
  • A simple coffin
  • Transportation of the deceased to the crematorium
